A method for producing a high wear resistance alloy comprising the step of melting an existing base cast iron alloy having a known composition and a certain iron (A) and carbon (C) content, characterized in the further steps of: adding carbon to the base cast iron melt in the form of pieces of tungsten carbide (E) for dissolution by diffusion, the tungsten carbide having a strict relation between the tungsten and carbon content; adding chromium (D) to said base alloy melt for controlling the solubility of tungsten carbide in the melt and for providing material for carbide formation, whereas chromium is not dissolved in the tungsten carbide (E); ... -. casting the resulting alloy melt and thereby forming an alloy with an additional precipitated carbide structure comprising chromium and carbon; wherein tungsten is substirutionally dissolved in the lattice structure of said chromium carbide structure, and wherem the, high wear resistance alloy comprises, by weight, 1-4 % carbon, 5-4~0 %, tungsten and 10-40 % chromium, the balance iron and other alloying components.
