The blanket has a nonwoven structure formed by adding oil absorbent particles to a flat array of fibers oriented perpendicular to the plane of the fabric, rotating these fibers so that they become oriented parallel to the plane of the fabric and compacting the fiber structure. A method for producing an oil absorbent blanket with a nonwoven structure comprises the following steps: (A) providing a flat array of fibers oriented perpendicular to the plane of the fabric; (B) adding strongly oil absorbent particles to the fiber material; (C) rotating the fibers so that they become oriented parallel to the plane of the fabric; and (D) compacting the fiber structure. An independent claim is also included for an oil absorbent blanket produced by this method.
