Screen aspect-ratio conversion apparatus for television has adaptive output unit to determine valid detection letter box border values

A letter box detection unit detects the letter box border values of a current input image. An adaptive output unit determines that the detected values are valid, if the detected values are within an active region and outputs the valid detection values to a scaling unit. The scaling unit adjusts the size of a image area to fit the size of a screen of a display device based on the valid detection values. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) screen aspect-ratio conversion method; (2) input image conversion apparatus; input image conversion method; and (3) method of selectively outputting detected letter box border values.
