Wool is transferred from its container to a shredder for producing shredded particles with a given maximum size which are then added to a mixer in order to produce a sand substitute material or concrete additive. Processing radioactive slag wool comprises the following steps: (1) transferring the wool from its container to a shredder, optionally along with some water; (2) shredding the wool into particles with a maximum length of 3 mm; (3) optionally putting the shredded wool into storage; and (4) adding the shredded wool and optionally water to a mixer. The end product can be used as a partial sand substitute material or as an additive for producing concrete.
