A heat exchanger (4) is used to heat the exhaust fumes and a burner (5) is used to burn off fuel. The heat exchanger forms part of the exhaust fume outlet (2) and part of the combustion gas outlet (5) from the burner. These two parts are configured so that heat from the combustion gases is transferred to the exhaust fumes. The exhaust fume outlet includes a soot filter (3). The exhaust fumes are preheated before they reach the filter.
