Student response system using optical patterns, cameras and pattern recognition software

To provide feedback from a group of participants such as students or attendees at an auction, to the head of the group, such as a lecturer or auctioneer, unique optical patterns on surfaces are assigned to and held by each of the participants so that the participants can show one of the patterns to express a choice to the one or more cameras 3 that can "see" the shown patterns. A computer system receives image data from the cameras and using optical pattern recognition software decodes the information encoded in the optical patterns. The decoded information is processed and stored in a database and correlated with other data concerning the participants. As an example of operation of the method each student may be given several cards each with an optical pattern to identify the student as well as a pattern to identify an answer, the student and answer also being written on the card so that the student can choose the answer they want. Then in response to a question from the lecturer each student shows the card with the pattern that they consider provides the appropriate answer to the question and each student's answer and the student identity gets stored in the database.
