A smaller poultry house for breeding pullets and layers in smaller groups by using light control zones enables, by a special arrangement of functional elements within and on the structure and by taking advantage of a specific behaviour of hen, to achieve the optimum quality of breeding with regard to animal health, quality of eggs produced and simplification of breeder's work. A partition wall (3) divides the interior of the poultry house into a resting room (1) and a room for scratching around (2). In the resting room (1), the optimum quality of breeding with regard to animal health is obtained by proper positioning of a feed silo (9) with two levels of feeding (9b, 9c), of roosting bars (10) rising obliquely and of exit openings for hens (15) above a dung grill (6). By proper positioning of intermediate shelves (7) and control of light on illumination openings (11), the breeder stimulates the awakening of hens' interest in laying eggs at dawn in the room for scratching around (2). Hens retreat automatically from the resting room (1) and from the dung grill (6) into the room for scratching around (2). The height difference between the floor of the room for scratching around (2) and the nests (5) enforces indirectly a phase of cleanliness, which means a clean product of laying eggs.
