The method involves continuously picking up a ballast by a cleaning device (12), cleaning and then throwing the ballast onto a track (3) to re-establish a ballast bed. Rails (24) that are ahead on the track are raised with respect to a working direction (8) of a cleaning machine (1). The rails are moved outwards a longitudinal side (25) of the machine with respect to a transverse direction (30) of the machine. The raised rails are placed down onto an area of the bed along sleeper ends (29) of the track behind the cleaning device.
