A method (500) for estimating multipath delays for a channel in a mobile communication system based spread spectrum, the method comprising: defining a set of available despreading delays for the channel; initiating (502) a search of paths of the channel using the delays to obtain channel estimates for the channel at each delay; compile (504) current delay profile for the channel based on the channel estimates; calculating (506) average delay profile for the channel using the current delay profile and one or more previous delay profiles; and detecting (510) peaks in the average delay profile and move (510) the detected peaks over time; the method being further characterized by detecting (518, 520) a threshold event based on the average delay profile and the current delay profile; and repeating (522) the operation of sensitive operation of detecting (518, 520) the threshold event initiation.
