A procedure for treating inflammatory bowel disorders and inflammatory disorders of the urinary bladder is described. A method of modulating the function of monocytes is also described. The procedure involves treating the blood of a patient with a photoactivable compound followed by ultraviolet light activation of the photoactivable compound. The blood so treated is returned to the patient in a process known as extracorporeal photopheresis.
