In a method and apparatus for determining parameters affecting design and operation of anerobic biological processes in a methane producing system, a transducer is used to determine the pressure in a gas collection chamber, having a known, variable volume and independent of the biogas formation chamber. The pressure change due to methane accumulation is converted into the change in chemical oxygen demand with respect to time.
