Process for the preparation of fibers of bioactive silica derived from a sol-gel, said method comprising spinning the fiber from a silica sol wherein the starting point of the spinning process corresponds to a sol viscosity of at least 3.000cP, followed by heat treatment for a sufficient period of time at a temperature in the range between 150 and 200C.
