An oral controlled release dosage form for releasing a drug in at least a portion of a region defined by the stomach and upper gastrointestinal tract, said dosage form comprising: (a) a core comprising a first solid polymer matrix, with said drug dispersed therein, and (b) a carcass that encompasses said core, said carcass comprising a second solid polymer matrix that swells after soaking with water to a size large enough to promote retention in the stomach while the stomach is in the feeding mode, and said housing having a proportion by weight drug: polymer that is equal to or less than 0.5 times the proportion by weight drug - polymer of said core, said housing having a thickness that is at least 0, 5% of the longest linear dimension of said dosage form, said second polymeric matrix being of a material and thickness respect cto said core such that when said dosage form is immersed in gastric fluid, said drug is released from said dosage form in said gastric fluid at a controlled rate limited at least in part by the diffusion of said drug through said housing to an extent such that at least 40% of said drug remains free one hour after said dive has begun and substantially all said drug is released in approximately twenty four after said dive has begun, said housing remaining intact for substantially all the period of drug release.
