EFFICIENT SYNTHESIS OF MUSICAL TONES HAVING NONLINEAR EXCITATIONS

An efficient digital waveguide synthesizer is disclosed for simulating thetones produced by a non-linearly excited vibrational elementcoupled to a resonator, such as in a piano. In a preferred embodiment, thesynthesizer creates an excitation pulse from a table containingthe impulse response of a piano sound board and enclosure. Alternately, thisexcitation pulse can be synthesized by filtering white noise.The excitation pulse is fed into the filter that simulates the collision ofthe piano hammer and string. Because the hammer-string interactionis nonlinear, the characteristics of this filter vary with the amplitude ofthe tone produced. The filtered excitation pulse is then fed into afiltered delay line loop which models the vibration of a piano string. Becausethe excitation pulse already contains effects of the resonator,the tone produced by the delay line loop does not require additional filteringin order to model the resonator.
