SURGICAL SITE PREPARATION COMPOSITION FOR A SKIN SURFACE

An antimicrobial film forming surgical site preparation composition includes afilm forming material and an antimicrobial agentsoluble in a fugitive solvent. The composition when applied to the skinsurface forms a substantially water insoluble, substantially tack-freeflexible film adherent to the skin surface. The film is capable of releasablyretaining the antimicrobial agent to substantially inhibit microbialgrowth on the skin surface. The film releases sufficient antimicrobial agentto substantially eliminate the microorganisms normally presenton the skin surface to prepare the surface for the procedure and continues torelease the antimicrobial agent during the procedure andsubsequent wound healing. The composition can be easily washed from fabric anddoes not stain the fabric even where the fabric is treatedwith chlorine bleach. In addition, a smooth continuous film is formed withoutthe use of a separate plasticizer.
