A vacuum-assistedvenous drainage reservoirof cardiopulmonary bypasssurgery with both hard and softshell reservoirs. The systemcreates regulated negativepressure of approximately -70to -25 mmHg within a sealedhard shell reservoir, or withina sealed housing surroundinga soft shell reservoir. Thereservoir has a blood inlet forsupplying blood removed fromthe patient and a blood outletleading to an oxygenator. Avacuum regulator subassemblyfor manually setting thepredetermined desired vacuum,a valve subassembly formanually enabling anddisabling the negative pressure,a pressure relief valve, and/ora vacuum stabilizer to reducethe severity of large changesin vacuum pressure may beprovided. A flexible membranein the hard shell reservoir mayexpand to contact the blood surface and reduce blood/air interactions. Avolume sensor for the hard shell reservoir may be used in afeedback loop for controlling the vacuum, circulation pump, or other device. Apiece of air-permeable in the venous return line enablesthe use of smaller cannulas suitable for minimally invasive surgery. Thereservoir need not be positioned well below the patient as inconventional gravity venous drainage configurations, thus adding flexibilityto the operation room layout and enabling a reduction in therequired extracorporeal blood prime volume.
