A vacuum-assistedvenous drainage reservoirof cardiopulmonary bypasssurgery with both hard and softshell reservoirs. A flexible membranein the hard shell reservoir mayexpand to contact the blood surface and reduce blood/air interactions. Avolume sensor for the hard shell reservoir may be used in afeedback loop for controlling the vacuum, circulation pump, or other device. Apiece of air-permeable in the venous return line enablesthe use of smaller cannulas suitable for minimally invasive surgery. Thereservoir need not be positioned well below the patient as inconventional gravity venous drainage configurations, thus adding flexibilityto the operation room layout and enabling a reduction in therequired extracorporeal blood prime volume.
