A media storage deviceincludes an embedded filter formanipulating universal clock basedstreams of data as they arewritten to or read from the mediastorage device. The media storagedevice will also manipulate streamsof data which are not beingwritten to or read from the mediastorage device. Preferably theembedded filter within the media storagedevice is an isochronous data pipewhich will receive programmedinstructions from an externalcontroller and manipulates streams ofdata according to the programmedinstructions in real time,coordinated with the universal clock.Alternatively, the isochronous datapipe includes fixed firmware forperforming the appropriatemanipulations. The media storage deviceis also preferably coupled to anIEEE 1394-1995 serial busstructure. As streams of data are received by the media storage device duringa write operation, those streams of data can be manipulated into adifferent format by the embedded filter before they are stored on the mediawithin the media storage device. As streams of data are beingtransmitted from the media storage device during a read operation, thosestreams of data can be manipulated into a different format by theembedded filter before they are transmitted onto the IEEE 1394-1995 serial busstructure. 1n both instances, the universal clock can beused to synchronize the data streams. The media storage device will alsoutilize the embedded filter to manipulate streams of data beingtransmitted between two other devices on the IEEE 1394-1995 serial busstructure.
