An ocular method comprising non-systemic localized ocular administration of apharmaceutically acceptable formulation and effective concentration of atleast one neuro-stimulatory and/or neuro-protective macrolide or other agentfor a duration sufficient to enhance viability, confer protection, and/orreduce degeneration of retinal neural cells; enhance corneal sensation and/orameliorate, and/or prevent ocular scarring. The method is used in a patienthaving or at risk for developing glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, or anotherocular neuro-associated disease.
