Disclosed is a growth promoting agent or life prolonging agent which is safer than a conventional one and can be used stably and efficiently for the production of animals including farm animals, domestic fowls and fishes/shellfishes, the cultivation of plants including vegetables, fruits and grains, the cultivation of microorganisms and the cultivation of mushrooms. A growth promoting agent comprising a sugar alcohol, particularly erythritol, as an active ingredient; and a life prolonging agent comprising a sugar alcohol, particularly erythritol, as an active ingredient.
