A decomposition progression retarder for the corpse of harmful small animals, such as rats, comprising a compound having fly ovicidal activity or larvicidal activity as an active ingredient. The retarder is capable of preventing any contour losing of corpse attributed to progression of decomposition of corpse of harmful small animals and is capable of preventing any secondary sanitary damage attributed to maggots breeding on the corpse. A poison bait containing a compound having fly ovicidal activity or larvicidal activity is disposed on a pathway of harmful small animals or in the vicinity of their lair to thereby retard progression of decomposition of corpse of harmful small animals killed. Pest insects can be controlled via the corpse of harmful small animals having eaten the poison bait containing the decomposition progression retarder.
