The invention concerns a method for coding an image or a sequence of images, generating a data stream having a hierarchical structure of data layers nested at n successive levels, where n is an integer, each of said n levels corresponding to at least one of the elements among the following: a predetermined resolution of said images, a quantization pitch of said images and a temporal frequency of said images, the method including a step of coding at least one of said layers, of level n+1, by prediction, at least based on said layer of level n. The invention is characterized in that said coding method is such that, for at least one difference image block of the layer of level n+1, said coding step is performed in accordance with a partial inter-layer prediction coding mode, using only part of the set of coefficients associated with a difference image block of the layer of level n used for said prediction and corresponding to said at least one difference image block of the layer of level n+1.
