Silica-based photocatalyst fiber having visible-light activity and process for the production thereof

A silica-based fiber, having photocatalyst activity under visible light, which fiber comprises(a) a first oxide phase mainly made of a silica component and, dispersed therein,(b) a second titania phase, comprising titanium and a metal element other than titanium,    wherein the amount of the titania phase increases towards the surface of the fiber.
