The invention relates to a method and a device (1) for the detection of faults in the roundness of wheels of railway stock or the like when said stock passes over a track (2) comprising rails supported by cross members (3). A leg of the track (2) is provided with piezoelectric accelerometers (4) measuring the amplitude of the vertical accelerations of the vibrations induced by the wheels. The accelerometers (4) are arranged between the cross members (3) and the number thereof is determined by the circumferential development of the wheels and the number of cross members on the leg, the length of the leg being at least equal to the development. Two inductive sensors (51, 52) placed on the ends of the track leg (12) are used to generate synchronisation tops and to calculate the linear displacement speed of the wheels. The signals are digitalised and filtered in a maximum attenuation band of the vibrations in such a way as to be able to determine the presence of defects by comparison with pre-determined vibration amplitude values, and the nature thereof, and to identify the wheel(s) exhibiting said faults.
