The invention relates to a method of identifying at least one element that is limiting the performances of a network. The inventive method comprises the following steps: taking measurements of a scattered variable defining the state of a communication service between two elements (T1, T3) in the network, and taking measurements of a set of local variables defining the state of at least certain elements (I1, SW1, ROUT, SW1, I3) in said network. Moreover, the method comprises a step consisting in calculating a multidimensional correlation function of the scattered variable with the local variables. According to the invention, the performance-limiting element (SW1) is that for which the local variable makes the greatest contribution in the correlation function.
