DEVICE FOR A SAILBOAT BOOM ARRANGED TO RESTRICT THE RAPID PIVOTING MOTION OF THE BOOM

The present invention relates to a device, preferably for sailboats, etc., which has a pivoting boom and which is arranged to restrict the rapid pivoting motion of the boom in connection with the utilization of the same, foremost when sailing before the wind in the intended sailing direction of the boat. Between the boat and the boom, there is coupled a brake (1) formed of a strap (2) and a strap-locking reel (3) having the function of braking the strap (2) upon rapid pulling actuation of the same. The strap-locking reel (3) is arranged to, upon rapid actuation and pivoting of the boom, brake the continued pulling out of the strap (2) from the reel (3), thereby retain¬ ing the boom and preventing the continued pivoting back thereof over the boat. According to the invention, the reel (3) com- prises two mutually rotatable turning elements (4, 5). Between the same, there is received a dilatant material (7), i.e., a material the viscosity of which increases in proportion to a shear rate applied to said material. Said dilatant material (7) brakes the pivoting of the boom at high pivoting speed and al- lows the boom to pivot at a low pivoting speed.
