Device for measuring the volume flow of a liquid comprises a container for the liquid with an outlet fitted with an orifice plate whose opening extends vertically upwards into the container, starting from an overflow level, and a pressure sensor mounted above the opening for measuring the hydrostatic pressure of liquid collecting in the container. The lower part of the orifice opening can be closed to raise the overflow level to a predetermined extent in order to check the calibration of the device. An independent claim is also included for checking the calibration of a device as above by closing the lower part of the orifice opening to give a predetermined maximum overflow height, feeding liquid into the container until the maximum overflow height is reached, measuring the hydrostatic pressure of the liquid column in the container and calibrating it as a maximum value, and reopening the lower part of the orifice opening.
