The method involves adapting the operating point of the engine and the state of the catalyzer with nitrogen dioxide activity, varying the component of materials concurrent with nitrous oxide oxidation so that only the nitrogen dioxide component required for exhaust gas treatment is present in the exhaust gas downstream of the catalyzer.
