[PROBLEMS] To provide a printed matter processing system capable of accurately identifying a location where an error has occurred during read and effectively performing repeated read processing of the portion having the read error. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] A watermark-containing document printing device (100) divides secret information into partial information and performs an error correction encoding for each of the partial information. After this, the printing device (100) converts them into a pattern image and embeds it into the paper sheet. Moreover, a watermark-containing document read device (200) extracts a signal from the pattern image in the paper sheet and decodes the error correction code for each partial information, thereby detecting a read error. The read device (200) again performs read of the portion containing the read error. For the portion which has not been decoded due to temporary operation failure of a scanner, scan processing is again performed and only the portion which has not been acquired is subjected to decoding processing. Accordingly, it is possible to obtain effective acquisition.
