A multiple-input / multi-output (MIMO) wireless transmit / receive unit (WTRU) for selecting antenna mapping is disclosed. Antenna mapping is a combination of one antenna beam and one RF chain. A plurality of antennas are coupled to the beam selector, at least one of the plurality of antennas having beamforming capability. Multiple radio frequency (RF) chains are also coupled to the beam selector. The calibration unit is coupled to the beam selector to perform channel calibration of the selected antenna mapping. Preferably, the calibration unit includes a processor for calculating the channel estimation and calibration matrix, and a memory for storing the channel estimation and calibration matrix for later use.
