A common voltage generation circuit and a liquid crystal display having the same are provided to reduce a flickering phenomenon by generating a positive data voltage which is not symmetrical to a negative data voltage. A common voltage generation circuit includes a common voltage regulating circuit(40) and a common voltage compensating circuit(50). The common voltage regulating circuit regulates a common voltage level in response to a compensation signal and provides the regulated common voltage. The common voltage compensating circuit includes a resistor, first and second voltage detectors, and a voltage comparator. The resistor generates a potential difference between the common voltage and positive and negative data voltages. The first voltage detector outputs the potential difference between the common voltage and the negative data voltage. The second voltage detector outputs the potential difference between the common voltage and the positive data voltage. The voltage comparator compares the outputs signals from the first and second voltage detectors with each other and feeds back the compensation signal based on the comparison result.
