Provided are a method for preparing a yttria stabilized zirconia sol for the electrolyte of a solid oxide fuel cell to reduce a manufacturing cost and to allow the microstructure of thin film to be controlled easily, and a method for preparing an electrolyte thin film by using the sol. The yttria stabilized zirconia sol is prepared by dissolving zirconyl nitrate in water to prepare a zirconyl nitrate solution; adding a chelating agent to the zirconyl nitrate solution and stirring it; dissolving yttrium nitrate in water to prepare a yttrium nitrate solution and adding a chelating agent; mixing the prepared zirconyl nitrate solution and the prepared yttrium nitrate solution; and maturing the obtained mixture at a room temperature for a day and filtering the mixture to remove the reaction residue and the impurities.
