An apparatus and a method for automatically controlling the white balance are provided to prevent a change of a white area and represent a white object with a white color. An ADC and interpolating member(50) converts an analog image signal into a digital image signal and performs a color interpolation. A digital white balance amplifying member(51) amplifies the interpolated digital image signal by means of a digital white balance gain. The first color space conversion member(52) performs the color space conversion of the digital image signal having the applied WBG(White Balance Gain). The second color space converting member(55) performs the color space conversion of the interpolated digital image signal. A white pixel condition check member(56) checks the white pixel condition by means of the digital image signal.
