PURPOSE: An IPC(Inter Processor Communication) apparatus and method using a UTOPIA(Universal Test and Operations Physical Interface for ATM) mapper in a system using an IPC is provided to transmit and receive IPC cells using a UTOPIA mapping type without checking VCIs/VPIs(Virtual Channel Identifiers/Virtual Packet Identifiers) of headers of all inputted cells. CONSTITUTION: The second adjacent board matching unit(205) has a plurality of UTOPIA ports for interfacing only IPC cells, and interfaces cells with the first adjacent board matching unit(201). A control unit(207) performs a corresponding operation as to the IPC cell when inputting the IPC cell, inserts a UTOPIA address about the UTOPIA port for transmitting the IPC cell into the IPC cell, and outputs the IPC cell. A UTOPIA mapper(203) has UTOPIA addresses about the UTOPIA ports, outputs the IPC cell together with the UTOPIA address about the UTOPIA port to the control unit(207) when the IPC cell is inputted through the UTOPIA port, and outputs the IPC cell inputted from the control unit(207) to a control board(250) through the UTOPIA port corresponding to the UTOPIA address of the IPC cell.
