A composition comprising an extract of Artemisia princeps var. orientails(Pamp.)Hara is provided to show excellent proliferation activity of osteoblast and inhibition activity of osteoclast proliferation, thereby being usefully used for preventing and treating osteoporosis. The pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating osteoporosis comprises an extract of Artemisia princeps var. orientails(Pamp.)Hara prepared by using a solvent such as water, alcohol and a mixture thereof, wherein the alcohol is preferably 5-100% ethyl alcohol or 5-100% methyl alcohol.
