A method for controlling the data rate of a reverse traffic channel in a mobile terminal is provided to support high double speed within range of the maximum output of a PAM(Power Amplifier Module) and offer a high-quality data service to a user by using the difference between maximum output power of the PAM and the RSSI(Received Signal Strength Indicator) of a received signal in case of deciding an RRI(Reverse Rate Indicator) for determining the reverse data rate of a mobile terminal. If the user of a mobile terminal accesses a data communication network and tries to transmit packet data through a reverse traffic channel, a main controller of the mobile terminal receives information about an access network limit from a base station through a forward channel(S10,S11). The main controller reads a rate control probability from a memory part and determines the current rate to transmit the current data(S12). Then, the main controller determines an APL(Available Power Limit) by using the difference between the maximum output power of a PAM and the RSSI of a received signal(S13). The main controller reads a table having information about a reverse data rate corresponding to the APL from the memory part and allocates a rate corresponding to the APL(S14). The main controller compares the current rate with the allocated rate and the access network limit and confirms whether the current rate meets the minimum value condition(S15). In case the current rate meets the minimum value condition, the main controller determines the reverse data rate and transmits the packet data through an RF transceiver part(S16,S17).
