A multi-protocol RFID reader and a method thereof are provided to realize a fast response speed while supporting a multi-protocol by preferentially reading RFID using the most frequently used protocol among a plurality of protocols based on a priority table and reduce gap between reading times using each protocol by alternatively reading the RFID with the protocols having a different frequency band. An HF(High Frequency) circuit(106) exchanges information with an RFID tag through an HF band and processes a signal transceived in the HF band. A UHF(Ultrahigh Frequency) circuit(109) exchanges the information with the RFID tag through a UHF band and processes the signal transceived in the UHF band. A controller(103) repeats a process for reading the RFID tag by reading the top priority protocol of the priority table and reading the RFID tag by reading the next priority protocol if the RFID tag is not read by the top priority protocol. If the RFID tag is read, the controller processes the information read from the RFID tag and repeats the process after adjusting the priority.
