APPRATUS AND METHOD FOR SAVING PHONEBOOK DATA IN PORTABLE TERMINAL

A method for storing data of a phone book in a portable terminal and an apparatus thereof are provided to prevent a storage space from being wasted and to store more data of the phone book by reducing an unnecessary storage space for items in which data is not inputted. An apparatus for storing data of a phone book in a portable terminal comprises a controller(200), a phone book manager(202), a database manager(204), a storage manager(206), a storage unit(208), an inputting unit(210), and a display unit(212). The controller(200) performs an overall operation of the portable terminal, like a control or a processing operation for a voice call connection or data communication. The phone book manager(202) compresses the data of the phone book, inputted via the inputting unit(210), in a variable record format by using the database manager(204), and stores the compressed data in the storage unit(208). The database manager(204) changes the inputted data of the phone book according to a variable record format composed of plural size fields expressing the size of the data inputted at each item and a data field where real data is stored, compresses the changed data and outputs the compressed data to the storage manager(206). The data manager(204) receives metadata expressing information on a structure of a phone book record and phone book records, decompresses the corresponding record by using the metadata, and outputs the decompressed record to the display unit(212). The storage manager(206) measures a size of the phone book record with a variable length inputted from the database manager(204), determines a position where the phone book record can be stored and stores the phone book record at the determined position. The storage manager(206) reads out a corresponding phone book record and the metadata from the storage unit(208) and provides the phone book record and the metadata for the database manager(204) if the database manager request a specific phone book record.
