The method involves disengaging a static function of an automatic transmission when the motor vehicle speed is lower than a limiting speed value and a turbine characteristic parameter of a hydrodynamic starting element e.g. torque converter is below a turbine characteristic parameter limiting value. The initiation criterion is checked to determine if turbine torque of the torque converter is below a predetermined value. An independent claim is included for an automatic transmission for motor vehicle.
