The pump has a volume control valve (15) arranged between a discharge area (30) of the pump and a low pressure inlet (40) in a fluidic manner. The volume control valve closes connection between the discharge area and the low pressure inlet during a suction phase of the pump, and has a pressure relief valve mechanism (48) that is arranged parallel to a valve mechanism (46) in a fluidic manner. A valve unit of the valve mechanism (48) is hydraulically operated depending on pressure that acts in a closing direction and in an opening direction.
