Method for preparing cationic poly(vinyl acetals) (I) by copolymerizing at least one cationic monomer (M1) with one or more vinyl esters of optionally branched 1-15C carboxylic acids; then saponification and acetalization. Method for preparing cationic poly(vinyl acetals) (I) by copolymerizing at least one N-alkyldiallylammonium salt as cationic monomer (M1) with one or more vinyl esters of optionally branched 1-15C carboxylic acids; then saponification to a copolymer of at least 50wt.% vinyl alcohol units and acetalization of these units to semi-acetal or complete acetal, using one or more 1-15C aliphatic aldehyde. The new feature is that copolymerization is done in a mixture of water and monovalent aliphatic alcohol, of water content 2-35wt.%.
