Preparing poly(vinyl ester-vinyl ether-vinyl alcohol-olefin) copolymer, which is composed of monomer units comprising (a) 0.1-50 mole% at least one vinyl ester, (b) 0-20 mole% at least one olefin, (c) 0.01-10 mole% at least one divinyl ether monomer unit (I), and (d) 50-90 mole% vinyl alcohol, comprises (i) radically copolymerizing the monomers (a), (b) and (c) to obtain poly(vinyl ester-vinyl ether-olefin) and (ii) carrying out alkaline hydrolysis of the poly(vinyl ester-vinyl ether-olefin) to obtain poly(vinyl ester-vinyl ether-vinyl alcohol-olefin) and the monomer units (d). Preparing poly(vinyl ester-vinyl ether-vinyl alcohol-olefin) copolymer, which is composed of monomer units comprising (a) 0.1-50 mole% at least one vinyl ester, (b) 0-20 mole% at least one olefin, (c) 0.01-10 mole% at least one divinyl ether monomer unit of formula (R1-C(R2)=C(R3)-[O-C(R4)(R5)-C(R6)(R7)] n-O-C(R3)=C(R2)-R1) (I), and (d) 50-90 mole% vinyl alcohol, comprises (i) radically copolymerizing the monomers (a), (b) and (c) to obtain poly(vinyl ester-vinyl ether-olefin) and (ii) carrying out alkaline hydrolysis of the poly(vinyl ester-vinyl ether-olefin) to obtain poly(vinyl ester-vinyl ether-vinyl alcohol-olefin) and the monomer units (d).
