The ring spanner (1) is for release of closely defined screw unions and incorporates at least oen ring (2,3) and at least one spanner multiply grooved formation together with a lever rigidly connected with a section of the ring. The ring has an aperture (8) open to a peripheral side (7) and has two free ends (11,12) enclosing the aperture. A closure component (9) fixes rigidly in a peripheral direction to the free ends for closure of the aperture. The two free ends (11,12) are provided with outwardly open slots (23) which accommodate the closure component. In the released state, the lever can withdraw the closure component outwards from the slots. It is also possible to pivot the closure component with a half cylinder (20) in a swivel direction.
