A camshaft for a large engine e.g. ship's diesel engine or locomotive, is assembled from two or more sections (1-5) linked by an interface fitting (9). The link fitting is free to slide axially with respect to one of the camshaft sections, between two positions. The camshaft sections have mirror image profiles which correspond to those of the link fitting. The camshaft mirror image ends bear non-circular e.g. triangular ovoid profiles.
