The hill-hold function integrated in a vehicle with an automatic transmission or a CVT-unit is automatically activated by a closed loop control system when an appropriate situation is recognized by a combination of sensors. The vehicle is additionally kept in a halted position by the aid of a controlled reduction of the efficiency of the transmission unit, either caused by an increase of pressure blocking the drive train or by an intentional overriding action.
