An armrest has an upper assembly base (7) and a lower assembly base (17) joined with each other through a fragile connection and a leaf spring (30). When the armrest receives excessive load at time of e.g. vehicle collision, the connection loosens, and the spring biases the upper assembly base to up/down relative movement with respect to the lower assembly base. The complementary guide surfaces (14a,14b,15a,15b,27a,27b,28a,28b) of both assembly bases generate friction-free play with respect to each other in response to relative motion of the upper assembly base.
