The apparatus (29) has a sensor unit (25) in the work space of the machine tool (1) and wit a detection range for a tool (30). A control unit (24) is connected to the sensor unit and is formed or programmed to be in a wait state for a given period of time when the sensor detects a tool and which generates a fault signal if the sensor does not detect the tool a second time within the time period. Independent claims also cover a method of monitoring a machine tool.
