The method involves determining a difference between a measurement for a reference-exhaust gas recirculation rate and a measurement for an actual- exhaust gas recirculation rate. A time point (tn) of a fuel injection (E) is influenced depending on the difference between the measurements of the reference-exhaust gas recirculation rate and the actual-exhaust gas recirculation rate. Rotation speed and load of an internal combustion (10) is provided as an operating parameter of the engine. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating an internal combustion engine with an exhaust gas recirculation.
