An ignition unit for an air/fuel mixture comprises a coaxial waveguide (23,24) coupled to a high frequency electrical energy source (25) to give a microwave plasma at the end through a high voltage. One end of the guide is a spark rod formed so that a free-standing plasma can be produced in the air/fuel mixture by a ring voltage through a field structure extending into the combustion chamber. A pre-discharge region is formed in the region of the plasma by an additional energy source (26,27).
