The device has a switching unit to interconnect an operating voltage of an alternating voltage electric motor. An evaluating unit (18) is connected with winding terminals of the motor. The unit (18) controls the switching unit and evaluates signals (38, 40) in the terminals under formation of evaluation signals, such that the switching unit disconnects the interconnection of the voltage when a rating behavior of the motor deviates. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a device for controlling an alternating voltage electric motor.
