The method involves producing fiber streams (36) and compressing the fiber streams toward a nozzle slot (25) in a sliding plate (20), such that a fleece is formed, where the plate is moved in oscillations by a crank assembly (23). The individual fibers of the fiber streams are accelerated within an active area of the slot using air streams. An oscillating component is provided in a conveying direction of the fiber streams. The plate (20) is provided upstream of a fluidized bed conveyor (26) or is a component of the fluidized bed conveyor. An independent claim is also included for a device for manufacturing a tobacco strand, comprising a compressing device.
